方便 (Convenient)

有讀者問「你方便嗎？」的英文是不是“Are you convenient？”。
“Are you convenient？”是典型的中式英語，是對號入座式的翻譯，並不符合英語運用規則。讀者犯錯只因為不知道 Convenient 的真正用法，所以我們必須翻查英文詞典。原來 Convenient 是形容詞，它的釋義是“If a way of doing something is convenient, it is easy, or useful or suitable for a particular purpose”。它的意思是「令人感到方便」，所以用來形容的名詞不是人，而是事物。例如：It is more convenient to eat in the kitchen 是「在廚房進食較為方便」，Will five o'clock be convenient for you？ 是「五點鐘對你方便嗎？」

They will meet in a convenient place 是「他們將會在一個方便的地方見面」。所以「你方便嗎？」是 Is it convenient to you？，而「我不方便」是 It is not convenient to me。
