橫掃 (Sweep)

最近兩個星期的大新聞，相信是台灣人包圍總統府，進行一連串示威，要求阿扁下台。由於他們穿上紅色外衣，所以報章說Red tide of rage against Chen sweeps Taipei。At least 300,000 ring Presidential Office in corruption protest，是說倒扁潮橫掃台北。大家可能還記得六月三日的滂沱大雨，造成澤國處處。

報章的標題是 Chaos as floodwaters sweep through SAR。

Sweep 是「橫掃、席捲」的意思。它是動詞，其他例子：Thunderstorms swept the whole country是「雷暴橫掃全國」，An icy wind swept through the streets 是「寒風席捲街道」，The wave of patriotism swept through the city 是「愛國浪潮橫掃全城」。注意：說一個人 Sweep an election 或Sweep to victory 是指「在選舉大勝」。例如：Indira Gandhi swept the 1971 election是「甘地夫人在1971年的選舉大獲全勝」。
