升級

在新聞報道，無論是國際或本地事件，我們都會聽到「升級」這個詞。當然，這個「升級」不是我們常常說的Promotion, Upgrade 或廣告的「升 Cup」，而是指事件逐步擴大或發展更緊張。英文就是 Escalate.
它是動詞，例如 They fear the dispute could escalate是「他們恐怕那項爭議可能升級」，The protests escalated into six days of rioting 是「抗議擴大為六天的暴動」，By so doing, we escalate the problems 是「這樣一來，我們就使問題更趨嚴重」，但 The cost of living is escalating 是「生活費在迅速上漲」，它的名詞是 Escalation, 例如： A steady escalation of violence 是「暴力逐步升級」，而 The recent escalation of street violence 是「最近街頭暴力事件迅速增加」。
