think of 和 think about 之別

讀者Jeff 來電郵問，think of 和think about (somebody) 都用來表達想某人，兩者用法有何不同？

同是想人，可有不同的想法。可以睹物思人，偶然想起；也可以刻骨銘心，不能自已。

大部分時間， think of you 和think aboutyou 可以互通。若真的要細分，前者只是浮起一個泛泛的念頭，轉瞬即逝；後者則在腦袋中盤旋不止，甩也甩不掉。如果硬性以時間劃分，think of 只需兩三秒，think about 至少一分鐘或以上。

就以流行歌詞為例。黃霑所寫的︰「當你見到天上星星，可會想起我？」很明顯，歌者不奢望對方會對自己念念不忘，因此用英文可以粗略把它翻譯成：

When you see the bright stars above, do youthink of me?

相反，The Turtles 的Happy Together︰Imagine me and you, I do.

I think about you day and night.

It's only rightto think about the girl you love andhold her tight,So happy together.

既然是朝思暮想（day and night），thinkof you 就不足以表達思念之情，只可用thinkabout you 了。
